An off-grid stay in Budgeree

Fully Charged Sydney 2024

After our short exploration of the Tarra-Bulga National Park, we drove north to Moe to meet our friends, Ron & Sue, for dinner.

We’re staying at their place tonight, in nearby Budgeree. Their house is off grid, powered by solar and an array of lead acid batteries. They drive a BYD Atto 3 which has V2L (vehicle to load) which means that, if necessary, they can plug their household items into their car. We wish our Tesla had that facility.

Charging

We try to avoid “stopping to charge” specifically. Instead we aim to just charge “while parked” to do something else.

For example, we were running 15 minutes early for dinner. We could have parked at the restaurant for that time, but we parked at the RACV Chargefox charger on the way there, instead. After dinner, we all dropped by Coles to grab some dessert. While parked anyway for eight minutes, we plugged into the Tesla Supercharger. We didn’t wait to fill up. We only charged while parked anyway. So, we spent a total of about a minute of our time charging, but got nearly 20 minutes of charge.

  1. V2L is only really beneficial to those who have a powerwall, Elon even said it's flawed technology unless you have a powerwall and not that many do so it's not a priority to them at the moment.

    1. Kylie Gilroy Yeah, I know Elon has dismissed it. But I think he’s missing the use cases. Most other EV companies seem to be including V2L. Even Tesla now provides and promotes V2L (and bidirectional V2H) on its Cybertruck.

We’ve had thousands of homes here this week with no power. Simply being able to plug the car in to provide power to the fridge and other essentials worked have been very helpful to many. I bet those with V2L have been very glad to have it.

We’d also love to have it for road trips, to do things like power a coffee machine and hot plate while we stopped somewhere without another power source.

      1. Tesla Tripping I wonder how many of those thousands of homes have an EV that have the V2L personally I wouldn't want to wear out my Tesla battery quicker.

That's great the CT will have it but also we will not be seeing the CT here for many years yet, if ever.

      2. Kylie Gilroy The wear on the battery for a measly 1 to 3kW for home appliances has surely got to be way less than the wear of a single drive to the shops.

Yes, I wonder how many owners of EVs with V2L have been very thankful to have it this past week.

      3. Kylie Gilroy a PW2 is somewhere in the region of $12-18k installed, depending on price fluctuations and grants. A new battery for our M3 is about $17k. Do you know which has greater capacity?
I'll take a bit of wear and tear on the car for V2G thanks.
