The Coffee Pedaler in Gundagai, and Mitsy

Bombala + Central Coast 2024

We stopped in at The Coffee Pedaler - Gundagai for morning coffee. While she waited, Fran made a new four legged friend “Mitsy” who had traveled from Western Australia.

Last night we shared a delicious Moroccan veggie bowl at Oliver's Real Food Gundagai. On the way in, Fran formed a conga line with Mum and her walker.

When we returned to the car, I had a chat with Mark who was charging his BYD electric van. It was a grey import. Only a 45kWh battery but great for running around town. He was on his way to Canberra (from Adelaide?) with motorbike in the back of the van.

We stayed overnight at the “Gundagai Tourist Suites” – motel style units away from the main road. As Mum walked slowly back to the car in the morning, I couldn’t help but show off our remote control car by “Summoning” it through the iPhone to reverse all the way to pick us up.

Breakfast was toast and spreads in our room. Just so you (and Mum) know it’s not all cafes 😉.

Charging

There are several Tesla Superchargers at the back of Oliver’s. But we used The NRMA / Chargefox chargers out the front which are slightly more convenient and cheaper (but slower). By the time we finished dinner, the car was charged up to 99%.

  2. I have friends in the Newcastle area that have a BYD electric van. They primarily use it for their business - Pirate Point Pizza in Stockton, if you’re ever in the area. Their pizzas are so good that my teens insist on us travelling the 30 minutes from home to get pizza there when we want pizza. Of course, there’s the added benefit of getting to catch up with our friends if the shop is not too busy.

From the conversations we’ve had about the van, I think its real world range is somewhere around 200km. My friends have said that they have to be very on top of making sure it’s charged often, but they love it. I know they do trips down to Sydney sometimes, and they’ve done at least one road trip in it where they’ve camped in the back overnight. The one major drawback they’ve mentioned is that the local BYD dealer/service centre can’t service it, nor can any local MyCar branches and they have to take it down to Sydney to get serviced. Or at least this was the case 12 months ago. Not sure if it’s changed since.

As for Oliver’s, their curries are fantastic! They did an amazing Dahl several years ago that I used to love getting when on long trips. They’ve changed their menu several times since then, and it makes me sad that I can’t get it anymore.

    1. Mel Legge Thanks for all the detail! Yes, Mark said similar about his van, but I had forgotten those details.

      1. Tesla Tripping I think the BYD EV vans are great, but they’d be even more useful if they had at least 400km real world range. I can’t remember if they do V2L, but a better range and V2L would make them a good van for sparkies and ‘clean’ tech trades.
