TRIPNG plates, finally on the new car

Personalised TRIPNG plates authorised and attached, after a bit of faffing around.

Yesterday, after buying the car, we tried a VicRoads office, but they said they didn’t do plate transfers there. So, today we arrived at VicRoads in Ringwood, which ironically and inconveniently has no car park. We parked in Eastland shopping center, over the road, removed our one day old plates, and crossed the road.

We had some playful banter with the staff, who kindly sorted out the transfer of a personally owned plate (oops) to a business vehicle. When we ordered the plate in line, i didn’t see any option to buy it asa business.

They told us that we had actually paid $140 (as part of our car order) for the “old” plates, since they are the slimline design, not the kind of ugly larger blue on white. They suggested we keep them, since we paid for them. I wish now that I had elected the cheaper option when ordering the car. Oh well.

The law requires displaying a blue “EV” triangle on each licence plate. They offered to sell us a pair (I think it was $5), including rivets, but I just unstuck the triangles from the old plates and stuck them on the new ones. It works well on this layout, to read as “EV Tripng”.

We thought we were all set to add the new plates to our car, until we realised that the car park scanner wouldn’t recognise us now as the same car that arrived 🤦‍♂️. So, we put the old plates back on, drove out of the car park, and swapped plates at our next stop.

  2. Such a shame that we can’t go with just a rear plate as I understand you can in the USA

    2. Jill Clarke The Juniper has an indicator stalk. But I have to relearn how to do wipers and high beam, via buttons on the steering wheel.

I have quickly adapted to having no gear stalk, but I still have the occasional phantom push of a non existent stalk. Forward, reverse and park are now done on the screen, which is pretty simple, but just new. I’m also experimenting with the auto gear selection, which is growing on me.

  6. When I changed plates on my (old) car I parked in a Westfield car park that has number plate recognition cameras. After I swapped plates I thought “wait, how am I going to drive out?” But when I drove out it opened up as normal. I was thinking maybe they have a check in place where if a plate tries to leave that hasn’t scanned in then they open up due to having Service NSW in the centre. Lucky you still had the old plates to use.
