Sizing up the Model Y for a bed

Sizing up the rear tray of our Tesla Model Y Juniper, to see how practical it would be to install a bed, and sleep in it, for some of the stops on our next road trip.

The folded down seats at the front are about 15cm higher off the ground than the tray at the rear. This makes it slope down, which makes a sleeper slide down during the night, and puts pressure on your hips. We know, because we had that very problem when we tried car camping in our Model 3, a couple of years ago. Terrible night’s sleep.

My second attempt worked a bit better:

It seems to me that all we need to do is raise the floor boards at the rear, as shown by the ad hoc blocks of wood I added.

But, I think I’ll save myself the carpentry, and just buy a Teraglide platform, which is designed for this job.

In case you’re wondering, part of the attraction of car camping in the Tesla is that it has “Camp Mode” to keep the cabin at a comfy temperature all night. Cheaper than a motel.

Next, to find a comfy mattress, to fit on top. The Snuuzu looks interesting 🤔.

  2. We bought a bed for our 3 and tested it last weekend in the garage lol it fits perfect and it's actually really comfortable.

We will be doing weekend camp trips soon, it comes with a 12V pump and it's for all models.

    2. Hi 👋. I strongly recommend trying to sleep on it. Our Model 3 mattress was “really comfortable” to lie on, but actual sleeping deteriorated.

What bed/mattress did you buy? How thick? Air, or air and memory foam?

      1. Tesla Tripping yes we slept on it last Friday night, we slept in the car in the garage in case I didn't like it before going camping.

I've had spinal surgery so I need to careful on what I sleep on, it was really good and yes air mattress, I can't add a photo on your page to show you but here is the link.

    1. Frankly Mydear Great question. We have storage in the frunk, sub trunk, and in front of the rear seats. We’ll stick any extra on top of the bed while driving. When stopped for the night, we’ll move it onto the front seat.

The Teraglide bed collapses so we can use the rear seats, if needed.

We also have a cube tent that attaches to the tailgate, if we need more room. See the photos in the first link in my post.

  4. Tesla Tripping why not get Clarke rubber to custom make one?

    1. Biing Yin Good idea. However, just plain foam doesn’t seem to be comfortable or easily collapsible.

    2. Biing Yin I bought a piece of foam from Clarke Rubber. $144 and I made a removable envelope from salvaged upholstery fabric. I roll the foam and secure it with Velcro straps.. my sheets & doona are in a zippered bag and such an easy set up when travelling. I don’t use camp mode. I turn everything off and vent the windows. No issues with warmth nor condensation.

      2. Snuuzu: Hi 👋. We are considering getting a Snuuzu. But my concerns are:
        1. Now that we have the Teraglide (awaiting delivery), will the Snuuzu mattress work ok in top of its flat level surface?
        2. Will the Snuuzu be too thick, on top of the raised platform, to leave manoeuvring room?
Do you have an Australian distributor, and affiliate program?

      3. Tesla Tripping Hello. Thanks for mentioning us!
Someone recently told us: “Teraglide combined with the Snuuzu mattress is absolutely epic! Hotel bed is a reality.”
And honestly, we love hearing that.
I’ll probably share this review and some photos in a post soon - just need to ask for permission first. Keep an eye out, it’s a good one

  7. Be careful not to point load the boot floor panels. My front one is snapped while carrying some heavy things in the boot and went over a dip, then snap. Cross pieces of wood will help.

    1. David Posavec Ooh, good call. I had wondered about that. If I did proceed with the side elevation, I figured I would also need support in the middle.

  8. I always sleep with my head at the boot end so my feet are slightly elevated. My pillows tuck in neatly against the boot and the side pockets are perfect for my torch, phone, shoes & water bottle.

  10. I’d raise it higher using crates and build a folding bed.

I made a folding bed in a ford territory for 2 girls.

They did 18,000 in 3 months then sold the car for more than they paid for it !
