Yahoo News picks up our 2% moment in Coober Pedy

Yahoo News Australia has posted an article about our recent experience arriving at Coober Pedy with 2% charge. As it implies in the article, scraping this low is pretty unusual for us, but hey, it makes a headline 😉.

    Ok probably wouldn’t do that in Coober Pedy. But I rolled into Thrumster yesterday from Sydney with 3% left. No headline, just trusting the car.

      Yeah, we normally just trust the car’s predicted arrival percentage, having arrived at other chargers with 5%, 4% etc, even when we had the option to stop at another charger along the way. But this time, the predicted 8% dropped gradually as we drove along, finally to 2%. It would have been around 0% if we hadn’t slowed down, as suggested by the navigation. And there were no other chargers (or towns) along that route.

      Mark Blackman Hi 👋. Yes, I did mention the motorbike reserve tank switch to the reporter. That was the only indication the motorbike gave of remaining range.

    Our closest call was also in the outback, driving from Boulia to Winton. The car indicated -1% battery at our destination. We set off anyway, dropped our speed to 80kmH as the car suggested and turned off the A/C. By the time we reached Middleton, about the midway point, we were showing +7% battery. We stopped there and found that we could have probably plugged in to a 10 or 15 Amp GPO by arrangement. We had lunch and didn't bother plugging in. We arrived in Winton with the A/C back on and 7% left in the tank. No sweat! We stayed at the Winton showgrounds and as a bonus we charged overnight from one of the available 32 Amp outlets for the cost of our camp site.

      Tony Smith I’ve only run out three times, ever. In petrol motorbike and cars. Mainly because the estimated range wasn’t very accurate.
