Car camping in Coober Pedy at 3°C

Uluru via Stuart Highway 2025

Coober Pedy was our first car camping stop on this trip, with Uluru still two days up the road. A powered site at the BIG4 Stuart Range Outback Resort, and the Snuuzu mattress in the back of the Model Y.

The rear seats fold flat, except that folded flat is not flat. They sit at an angle, and a few hours of quietly hoiking yourself back up the slope is its own special kind of tired. The Snuuzu mattress is genuinely comfortable and it flattens the kink where the seats meet, but it does not fix the slope, and if anything it makes it slightly worse. We tried backing up a rise to lift the rear a little, then gave in and used the levelling ramps we had bought a few days earlier. Making the bed also means everything else has to go somewhere, so the bags end up stacked across the front seats and piled over the dash.

Warm all night, right up until nature called. "Siri, open the Tesla boot" is a fine piece of technology until it opens your bedroom to the desert. We shuffled out half asleep into 3°C and walked over to the amenities block.

Next to us was a group who had hired 4WDs for the week, on their way back from trekking through the Simpson Desert. I had climbed into an air conditioned bed feeling grateful, and a little guilty, while they got into their swags. In the morning I asked how they had gone. Not much sleep, they said. Too cold.

By sunrise Fran had made friends with a ginger cat, which is entirely in character. She can find a cat in any town in Australia.

We enjoyed the mess hall too, all of us jostling around the kitchen to cook dinner, and again at breakfast, comparing notes on where we had been.

Charging

The powered site kept us warm and charged the EV battery: 15 amps at 236 volts, so about 3.5 kW. We had already fast charged to 75% in town, so this was just the last quarter, and the car reckoned on 5 hr 25 min to finish it, off the same kind of post from which the caravans around us were running their cooking and heating.

  4. That’s nice. We got the snooze as well. We have our rear tires lift so it’s much better. Not so sure if there better way to do it

  5. Tesla Tripping what does lifting the rear tyres do? Is it for having a flatter sleeping level?
Just read your description and it answers my query.

  6. @Tesla Tripping interesting to know what are the levelling ramps you said you bought earlier? I’m looking to do a camping trip in my EV (not a Tesla) that also has the rise when the rear seats are down.

  7. We slept one night in the back of our Y at the Ayers Rock Campground, on our Nova Pads mattress. We put the back tyres on rocks to make it flat (ish). I am 5'8", he is 6'4", and it was one of the worst nights of sleep of my life. Getting up to go to the toilet in the middle of the night was a total debacle. There's nowhere to put anything like phone, water, book. I don't even think it would be good with one person, but it would be slightly better as you could angle yourself. I still would book a motel room thanks. Like we did for the rest of this 6-week trip, but hubby was desperate to try the car for at least one night, and was hugely positive about it as he is a Tesla fanatic. Didn't stop his first words in the morning being "well, we're never doing that again".

    1. Sally Bell Sleeping badly is a form of torture. I pick the motel room as well, especially for the late night bathroom breaks

    2. Sally Bell Yeah, it’s a challenge with two people, especially midnight toilet runs. But it depends on mobility. Fran has some limitations that mean we probably will cease sleeping two people in the car. I have done some solo trips which have worked out great, now that I’ve got the flat bed perfected.
