How EVs charge: at home, and at a camp ground

Most of the time with an EV, we just plug it in overnight at home to get a full "tank" of battery charge ready to go in the morning.

Any household powerpoint can charge the car at 10A (10 amps) (about 2.4kW). At a camp ground, you can usually get a 15A supply (about 3.6kW), which should have you charged and ready to go the next morning.

This is a slightly technical video, of our first time trying to figure this out, for those interested.

  1. Full array of power options
    10A / 15A & 3phase plug adapters (single phase power)
Type 2 - Type 2 (Tesla brand as heavy duty and full amps)
Extensions cords for use with 10/15A plugs. I’ve modified slightly so that I can use the 15A extension cable with a short lead 10A to 15A cross-over cable. Have to ensure you only use the 10A as charging plug, otherwise you’ll pull 15A and blow the circuit breaker.

    1. Basic kit for local travel. Deficient is an air compressor & jack (most cars have these to use) 🤓

    2. Nick: Does “modified” mean that you filed down the 15A earth pin? 😉. I’ve been trying to find some way to have one extension lead that will work for both 10A and 15A, without needing an expensive and bulky in line fuse.

I saw Ludicrous Feed had something to do it, but I couldn’t find exactly what.

      1. Tesla Tripping. I cut down an 10A extension cords I had laying around, grabbed a 15A female from Bunnings and all set & done. I also have this in a $5 water resistant housing. White lead is 10A, orange is 15A.

  4. Just completed a 1600Km trip up to Darwin NT on 15 amp UMC. in the middle of the day the draw on the system was 227v overhead the supply from the demand (ac/refrigerators) so stayed the night and second had to buy separate powered campsite for the car as well as accomodation in Katherine so if B you are travelling get a 5 pin 32 apm and leave them in your dust.

    1. Shayne Mckinlay: Thanks. I have a 32A 5 pin, but haven't had the opportunity to use it yet.
