A balcony Airbnb on the Central Coast

Fully Charged Sydney + Victoria 2023

We’ve been staying the week at this beautiful Airbnb flat, tucked under the hosts' house. It includes a huge balcony that overlooks the trees and is visited each day by a wide variety of birds.

We asked the hosts, when booking, about plugging in an EV. Although they have not had that request before, they were very happy to try to assist, offering for us to drive down their driveway to plug in. Unfortunately, the top of the driveway has a tall peak, which is apparently worse than it looks, because the Tesla made an awful scraping sound when we tried to cross it. We reversed, and of course it made the same sound. So, we aborted the attempt and instead just parked across the road.

Under the car, I could see plenty of scrape marks (from this and other lesser scrapes) but I couldn’t spot anything loose.

It’s sad and ironic that we managed to travel nearly top to bottom of Australia, along some really dodgy roads, but met our undoing in a semi suburban driveway. But, it seems no actual damage done.

We noticed when we had the driver’s windows open, we could hear the car make some rattling sound from the right hand outside of the vehicle, when we drove over bumps. We thought it was related to the scrape.

Update:

A few weeks later, we asked Tesla to have a look at it. After a couple of visits, the noise turned out to be unrelated to the scrape. It was just some rattling in the plastic hubcaps, which they fixed.

  1. Sorry about the scrape and I relate to that kind of luck. Lovely photos of the birds!

  2. This is my problem at our coast house. I need to get the driveway altered so I can get into the carport for charging (already paid for the power point to be installed).

  4. That is such a shame! Hope it can be fixed easily! There is an AirB&B I love to visit but with a treacherous driveway. I carry a long heavy-duty extension cord and park on the roadside.

  5. Yes, quite a few urban driveways put a stop to the M3 with its longer wheelbase. Always awful to hear that sound.

  6. If you take that at a bit of an angle you’ll be right.

    1. Pat Anunda Guinane Good advice. Unfortunately, this driveway also has a raised gutter separating it from the neighbour’s driveway, and you can’t see it to avoid it if going in at an angle.

  7. Funny I was just looking for a group Airbnb Tesla in Australia when I saw this post. Anyone know such a group or perhaps start one?
We have our holiday house renting as SRT. Thought we don’t have a fast charger, but installed outdoor power point for easy access to portable charger plus have couple of spots nearby that you could charge your car for free. Would be nice to have a group where we can swap rentals🥰

    1. Valda Soliman Do you mean, swapping houses with an EV charger? Or do you just mean finding Holiday rentals which have a charger?

Airbnb, Booking.com and other accommodation apps do have an “EV charger” filter option, but it seems that most hosts don’t realise that just having an available power point would be enough to tick that box.
