An overnight at Durham Farm, Bundanoon

Fully Charged Sydney + Victoria 2023

We stayed last night in Bundanoon at Durham Farm. Beautiful place, along another unsealed road, in an Airbnb in a converted half of a barn. Beautiful dressage horses in the other half of the barn. We didn’t hear our equestrian neighbours during the night.

We asked our host, Virginia, about charging our EV overnight. She said they hadn’t had that request before, but she was very helpful in locating a power point for us. She asked “how much do you usually get charged for this?” I said “We don’t normally get charged, but I’m happy to pay you. I think it will cost you a about $4 (off the top of my head)”. I later calculated it at 15 hours (7pm to 10am), 10 amp outlet, 240 volts = 15 x 10 x 240 = 36kWh. At 14c per kWh (estimate based on our previous rate at home), that’s $5.04. We left $20 cash on the kitchen bench to cover it.

  1. $0.14 per kWh is rock bottom.
My residential off-peak in Sydney is $0.21 with a few discounts.

EnergyWatch tells me a business in regional NSW would be paying somewhere in the general area around $0.30 to $0.50, dependant upon Fixed/Single Rate or Time of Use Off-Peak/Shoulder/Peak.

So your $20 would cover a night’s charging.

FWIW, I offered to pay the caravan park we’re in at present $10 a night for charging, but they didn’t want anything. 😎

    1. Stephen Thompson Thanks for the info. We were paying 7c per kWh between midnight and 4am, so it seems to vary wildly. The only unknown in the equation is the electricity rate that the host is paying.

  2. Wow $0.14, the lowest I've found here in Qld is $0.23. Wish we were getting rates that low, I didn't even get that pre-covid.

  3. We are paying 37c/kWh in SA. And that's at the best rates in the market for where we are at...
Paying/charging for power, nothing to be sniffed at.

      1. Tesla Tripping flat rate. Controlled load is a bit cheaper. Energy Locals.
People on time of use pay about this for the peak rates. Mind you, these are good rates down here. Friend on AGL pays more...

      2. That is a really high rate. I am paying 30c / kw at public DC chargers in SE QLD, so I would guess it's costing the vendor a lot less.
