A slow charge in Lorne, while shopping

Grampians + Great Ocean Road 2023

We stopped in Lorne to buy a few groceries, post a parcel and grab a coffee. Since we had to be there a couple of hours anyway, we connected to the slowish 7kW RACV destination charger at Lorne Visitor Information Centre. They handle queuing in a way I haven’t seen before. We had to ask in the center to borrow a permit to display on the car while charging. They also asked us to write our details in their log, so they could call us if we stayed more than two hours and someone else was waiting. Very proactive approach.

We also looked through the visitor center media displays to learn how the hard work was done in the 1920s to build The Great Ocean Road, mostly by returned soldiers with picks. Amazing.

  1. In your tripping how many chargers have you encountered that weren’t working? I suppose the Tesla chargers have been very reliable. We haven’t come across broken chargers but have seen a lot of complaints online.

    1. Margaret McDonald We came across two RACQ chargers not working on the QESH (Queensland Electric Super Highway) in Far North Queensland, which were out of action for many weeks. They were probably the worst since they are so essential for that route and there’s only one fast charger at each location (no redundancy).

We did come across some faulty Tesla chargers at Broadway in Sydney just after #FullyChargedLive. But they were repaired quickly and the multiple chargers there meant that there were options.

Those and perhaps a couple more are mentioned in our blog posts.

It seems that failures are worst when whoever commissioned the chargers didn’t also factor in a service contract to keep them maintained and have spare parts on hand.

  2. Is that charger only operating during visitor centre opening hours? Nothing after hours?

    1. Linda Mae Reeb Good question. I wondered also, but forgot to ask. I can’t see any physical reason why it wouldn’t work after hours, unless they turn it off.

  3. We had a weekend in Lorne in February, after the schools were back, and did not get to use this charger even once - it was always in use, day and night!

We were fine though- just drove back via Torquay and the RACV fast charger all to ourselves!
