Coffee Pedaler, then Dog on the Tuckerbox

Melbourne ↔ Sydney via Gundagai 2023

Morning caffeination at The Coffee Pedaler in Gundagai. Then stopped down the road at Dog On The Tuckerbox. Years ago, we stopped here at Oliver's Real Food and for the first time saw the Tesla Superchargers at the back. That’s probably what started us mulling over the idea of buying an electric vehicle some day. Now we’ve come full circle.

Charging

There seems to be a bit of work going on at the chargers. I decided to give The NRMA / Chargefox chargers a go. These ones aren’t free. I used the faster charger and got the same speed that I think I would have got from the Tesla supercharger, since our car takes a maximum of 170kW. We get 20% discount, since I am an NRMA member.

  1. The car park at Gundagai sadly is absolutely pathetically maintained. Considering all the visiting traffic and EV chargers, it’s a disgrace.

    1. David Pryce Oh, is this its usual state? 😮

      1. Tesla Tripping It’s been pothole ridden, rough surfaces with little repairs for years. It makes this stop such a disgrace.

    2. David Pryce indeed if anyone in the media wants to talk to people about the state of EV charging then this is the place to send them.

Whilst the NRMA chargers are great (50kW free ones) and I was a big fan.... None deliver 50kW and 42-44 is more like it which realistically down 20% of their performance potential, they need an upgrade to 75kW and hope like most BP sites you get 65kW.

I've also decided that whilst these are an excellent option for locals and cities......

We really do need 250kW stuff on the major trunks.

YASS has 120+ 6MW wind turbines so connection to the grid shouldn't be very hard!

  2. It’s my regular stop in my way to Canberra. I’m a RACV member so wonder if I get discount too? How do you check?

    2. Alice Chiew you only get the discount if you add your membership number to the Chargefox app...assuming that the NRMA still doesn't have it's own.

  3. I'm fairly sure they were still branded Chargefox when I went through there in January. I tried to use them, but all of them were dead. Fortunately every Supercharger was available. You get what you pay for with Tesla.

    1. James Mackness I’m pretty sure they’ve looked like this, with Chargefox and NRMA logos, since I started using them about 18 months ago. I just checked a photo from April last year and it looks the same.

      1. Richard Webb might be the case, like I say, they were broken, so I didn't look closely. They were (and still are) on the Chargefox app, so I probably just assumed that was the branding.

    2. James Mackness Yes, they have orange Chargefox branding. The one I used had a black/blank LCD screen but the charging still worked. I reported the fault through the Chargefox app.

  4. Us too - the Gundagui superchargers where the first ones we inspected and thought one day we will have an EV!

  5. We used the chargefox ones on trip to QLD as cheaper and faster than the adjacent Tesla ones.

Site constrained by 500kw transformer on the pole.

Suggest getting minimum and driving up the road to Yass where it's free

  6. Looks like the drainage and sewage issue hasn’t been fully fixed. When I was there last June I was all wheel driving in slush.

  7. Tesla Tripping this whole site (chargefox/NRMA and Tesla) was down after Easter Friday. I think it was back up again within 24hrs or so but. So maybe they are upgrading the power connection to make it more reliable.🤞 There seems to be one more switchboard cabinet now. See photo from the Thursday before Easter Friday when we went through.

  8. We are intending to apply for destination chargers via the next NSW EV grant funding. There is rear lane access to the Gundagai cafe and plenty of space for up to 4 chargers. Plus I'll be able to charge up my own model 3 😉

  9. Great pics! We're working to try to get the state of the carpark addressed.
BTW I've heard that the coffee at The Coffee Pedaler is great!
