A charging spot near Sydney Airport

NSW South Coast + Bright 2023

I drove to Sydney Airport to pick up Francis, coming back from Hamilton Island. Found a convenient charging spot in a nearby suburb, to park while waiting for her plane to land.

Charging

Since I had to wait anyway for the flight, I opted for the slower (and cheaper) 50kW charger, rather than the “ultra fast” 350kW. Our Tesla Model 3 RWD only does a max (briefly) of 170kW, and typically 50 to 100kW anyway.

Assuming the rapid fast are not operational?

    1. Ah, good point. The ultra fast chargers were working too. I just chose the slower one. I’ve added an explanation in the post.

  2. Are you saying Francis went to Hamilton Island but didn’t go by Tesla? Very out of character…

    1. Richard Webb LOL. It was. We did drive there a few months back. But this was just a three day visit to our daughter.

  3. When you say it only briefly charges at that speed, what do you mean? We are looking at buying a model Y and I’m trying to better understand charging these things.

    1. Jordan McShannon Hi. Our Tesla Model 3 is the standard range RWD version. It has an LFP battery which has a maximum charge rate of 170kW. I have only seen it get near that speed for less than five minutes. Then it ramps down to near 100kW then 50kW, as the battery nears fully charged.

I should do a test of charging at a 50kW vs a 350kW charger from say 20% to 90%, at the same temperature. My guess is that the 50kW charger would take about twice as long (not seven times as long). I’m happy to answer any questions ☺️

    2. Jordan McShannon There seems to be a detailed discussion of charging rate here (I have not read through it):
