From Mount Beauty to Cube Cafe Wodonga

Queensland Coast 2023

We drove north from Mount Beauty, loving the long stretch of green valleys, but increasingly realising that there aren’t really any lunch options along the way. We pulled in to Wodonga and grabbed some lunch and coffee at the Cube Cafe Wodonga, aka Ploughmans Cafe.

When we left the cafe, I noticed a sign near a pedestrian crossing warning of swooping magpies. While I was admiring the tree in the courtyard, one of the swooping magpies introduced itself, with a click next to my ear. I maintained eye contact and slowly stepped away backwards.

Charging

Charging bellies gives us a great opportunity to also change the car. We didn’t really need it, but best to use the time. The parking area behind the cafe has a row of Tesla superchargers. It was a bit of a last minute decision to charge there, select the charger in the navigation, so the car hadn’t yet had much of a chance to warm up the battery for optimum charging speed. But that’s all automatic. All we did was park the car, plug it in and walk away.

It was a busy spot. When we arrived, there were two available chargers out of six, and a warning through the Tesla app to not sit too long, or be charged idle fees, which is a great way to keep people moving. While in the cafe next door, I kept an eye on the number of available chargers through the app. When it was getting busy again, and we had more than enough charge, I moved the car to a shady spot.

  1. A few weeks back we were heading from Sydney to Wodonga, and looking to charge at Gundagui- it popped up a message that we should consider another location to charge because Gundagui was very busy.
Another instance of the rest of the world options not applying to Australian conditions!

There was one charger free when we arrived and the car next to us pulled out before we had plugged in, and also the NRMA to choose from.

But I can see these banks of chargers being full on holiday weekends from now on. All their 6s need to go to 12

    1. Jill Clarke drive to arrive when not busy is easy solution for that problem if that's you travelling in school holidays. In the case of Gundagai - there is some serious $$ to upgrade the HV and transformer there (needs to be done)
