Final leg: Holbrook to Melbourne

Queensland Coast 2023

The final leg of our return trip from Airlie Beach in Queensland, to the eastern suburbs of Melbourne. We left our accommodation at The Jolly Swagman Motor Inn Holbrook, then a brief stop at Chiltern Rest Stop. At lunch time we grabbed a couple of salad sandwiches from Mawsons Bakery Cafe, in Euroa, and ate them in Seven Creeks Park while the car charged and kept Archie in “cat mode” (shh, don’t tell him the proper name for it) air conditioned comfort.

Then on to Croydon Vet Clinic and Lou Lou's Cattery and Small Animal Boarding Pty Ltd, and finally our last temporary accommodation at our generous sister Helen’s house in Knoxfield.

In the pantry, we found our last bag of Brookfarm Granohlaah for breakfast the next morning!

Charging

We left our motel with about 85% battery from overnight charging. There were no handy external power points but our host suggested plugging into an inside power point. Our extension cord fit neatly under the door. The power point didn’t feel hot when tested at night, but after a brief charge in the morning (after the coffee run) the prongs were very hot, which isn’t great.

We needed one charging stop on the way, so we just picked where we would be at lunch time, which happened to be the Tesla Superchargers in Euroa. Quick, easy and all done before we finished our sandwiches.

  2. Yep I will never charge from a GPO using a extension lead, you've also mentioned before on a post about how hot the prongs get as well, you're a bigger risk taker than me lol

    1. Kylie Gilroy It depends on the power point. 90% of the ones I’ve tried are fine. Some sites seem to not have a power point to proper spec for 10A draw. That’s why I test for heat on any new power point, a few minutes after plugging in, and abort if it’s hot.

      3. Tesla Tripping but what about when you are sleeping you, you can't test, I'm getting major anxiety now 🥴

      4. Kylie Gilroy LOL. Best to be cautious (so not needing to be anxious 😉). We’ve had only a few places where the power point heated up, which we noticed when testing it five or ten minutes after plugging in. For example on a deck power point at a cabin park (but another one was fine) and the occasional wall socket. It’s been the power point that is faulty, rather than our extension cord (which is heavy duty and tested). We obviously prefer to plug in directly without the extension cord, where distance permits. On some occasions, the Tesla charger has detected a building wiring fault and refused to charge. Caution and testing are a good idea ☺️.

      5. Tesla Tripping I've experimented with extension cords/GPO and a cheap thermal imager (and posted in Electric Vehicles for Australia). The heating is actually slow unless something is severely wrong. I check for heat at 15 and 30 minutes too. The contacts in the GPO are a big source of problems.
